Letter to Parents
Dear St. Joseph’s School Parents,
As your educational partner, we continue to strive to provide an academic setting that challenges our students’ minds, hearts and faith development. An essential element of the academic component is continual assessments through written work, oral assignments and testing. Those results are shared in parent conferences, progress reports, report cards and through standardized test results.
In 2011-2012, all of the schools in the Diocese of Duluth will be shifting their standardized testing to a different company and a different format based on the recommendation of the principals. The Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS), usually administered in the spring, will be replaced in the fall of 2011 with the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test through the Northwest Evaluation Association. Some key similarities and differences between the tests include:
ITBS MAP Test
Normed Referenced Test National Normed Referenced Test National and local
Grades potentially taking the test include 2-7 Grades Kdg through Grade 8 could potentially take test Frequency of test is once a year Frequency of testing is two - three times a year
The MAP assessment offers unique elements to help us better understand our students and their progress. Data analysis is provided relative to growth, proficiency and norms. The results become a classroom tool that relates test scores directly to classroom instruction. The data provides teachers with an efficient way to assess ability levels of learners. Therefore, teachers can more easily target appropriate instruction for each student or groups of students, building both individual growth and classroom achievement.
MAP tests will be given two - three times a year beginning in September, 2011. Parents will continue to receive a detailed summary of their child’s test results with this new format. The ITBS testing will be completed this year as planned before we transition to the new testing system.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for sharing your child(ren) with us. It is our privilege to work with them.
